Maintaining your hardwood floors

Proper care of your hardwood floors, when they are new, will help keep them looking new for years to come.

  • Place mats at all exterior doors
  • Felt protectors should be applied to all furniture, especially chairs
  • Potted plants should be elevated slightly for air flow and never watered to overflow
  • Be cautious of certain types of shoes, especially women’s high heels
  • Sweep and dust mop often (dirt and grit on the floor will grind away at the floor’s finish)

  • Clean all spills as soon as possible with a damp sponge.  DO NOT use detergents, abrasive cleansers, wax or oils

  • Damp mop only when necessary, using warm water or a vinegar/water mixture (1/2 cup vinegar to one gallon of water). DO NOT allow extra water to saturate floors
  • Immediately dry excess moisture off of hardwoods when cleaning
  • Do not use ammonia or dust cleaners---many of these products permanently damage the floor’s finish
  • Consider a maintenance coat after a few years of wear

Why use hardwoods?

Hardwood floors are durable and add natural beauty to your home. They are easy to maintain, reduce allergens, and increase your home's value.

Why do gaps periodically appear between the boards in hardwood floors?

Hardwood floors are a natural product and will contract and expand with the changing seasons. During the winter months, hardwoods will shrink and show some cracks, but will normally close back as the summer season approaches. These movements in hardwood flooring are normal and should not be considered “a flaw”.

How long will hardwood flooring last?

With proper care and maintenance, solid hardwood flooring will last a lifetime.

Q. Why use hardwood flooring instead of carpet?

The initial cost of hardwood flooring may be slightly higher than carpeting. However, long-term cost of hardwoods (that can be refinished to look new time and time again), as opposed to replacing worn carpet, is significantly less. Another benefit of hardwood flooring is the absence of allergens, which build up in carpet over time and can trigger respiratory problems for people with allergies.
